According to the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) guidelines issued on February 26, 2015, every animal has the right to live with dignity and be free from cruelty. However, pet owners must also ensure that their pets do not cause any inconvenience to other apartment residents.

Over the years, various court rulings and AWBI guidelines have reinforced pet rights. It is imperative that cooperative housing societies review these regulations and draft an appropriate Pet Policy. This policy should be formulated and approved in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to ensure legal compliance and community harmony.
