In a major step towards addressing the concerns of pet owners, the Maharashtra government has issued a directive to all municipal corporations, councils, and nagar panchayats to create dedicated spaces for the dignified cremation or burial of domestic animals.
As per the new guidelines, these animal cremation sites will be set up near solid waste management centers, distinctly separated from human cremation grounds. Authorities have been instructed to maintain high standards of sanitation, implement odour control measures, and fix a standard fee structure for pet owners utilizing these facilities.
For countless families, pets are more than just animals — they are loyal companions, beloved friends, and integral members of the family. Yet, until now, cities like Nagpur lacked appropriate facilities to honour deceased pets respectfully. Grieving owners were often left with no choice but to dispose of their pets in undignified ways, leading to emotional trauma and cultural concerns.

The issue gained significant attention after Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik raised it during the Maharashtra legislative session in 2023. He highlighted how improper disposal of animal remains near human cremation grounds was not only distressing but also deeply hurt religious sentiments. Responding to these concerns, the state government finalized a policy in 2025 to designate specific areas for animal cremations.
Interestingly, back in 2012, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had proposed an advanced animal incinerator project at Bhandewadi. Sanctioned with a budget of ₹5 crore, the facility was designed to handle 500 kg of carcasses per hour, complete with cold storage and post-mortem services for cattle. Despite the promising start, the project faced delays over the years.
With the new directive, the Maharashtra government seeks to finally bridge this long-standing gap, ensuring that grieving pet owners have a respectful and hygienic option to bid farewell to their beloved companions.
